Eh?

I went to Auburn today with the family. They’re trying to find a Christmas gift for my brother (that’s literally sold out, everywhere — even online). I just drove them up there and around town. My dads car tore up on him (starter), I think he’s going to try to fix it tomorrow. He used his truck a few days and had to put like $26 in it. Pretty bad when you can go a week for $23 in the car that gets 35 MPG.

I checked my grades today and was happy to see that I passed all my classes (thank you GOD). I was worried about the music class, but it was passed. The next set of classes start on January 11th, 2006.

Tomorrow I go to my grannys house for their Christmas time.

I’m sick, just a cold. I guess I’ll get to bed, there’s nothing else to do.

Media Bias and How it Affects Us

I posted my final exam essay a few days ago, so now I’ve decided to post one of the best papers (I think) that I have ever written. I got an A+ on it, so obviously the teacher thought it was good too. For some reason when I closed it on the last edit, I forgot to save my edits. Thus, a few corrections were not included, so some stuff may not be perfect (I’ve attached an updated version). This was a documented essay, so I site my sources at the end. Here’s an excerpt:

The media affects our daily lives in numerous ways – from television to radio to print. Sometimes these media avenues persuade our opinions on certain issues – such as abortion, homosexuality, racism, and political. Numerous times throughout history the media has downplayed bias, which simply means prejudiced*.

Media bias dates back to the early days of the newspaper and continues to this present day*. There are many examples throughout history showing biased media. Benjamin Franklin wrote a great example of early media bias in 1728 when he wrote an article in favor of printing paper money. Franklin did not specify he would be one of the beneficiaries, in terms of business, in printing the money*. Sometimes such bias pushed the political leaders of the time to limit the freedom of press, as did Abraham Lincoln when he ordered many newspapers, in favor of the South during the American Civil War era, to shutdown operation*. There are countless times in history where the media has been bias towards one particular point of view.

Click here to download the PDF version of this document (rough draft). I’d love to see some comments on what others think about this! Documented areas in the excerpt was indicated with an asterisk (*).

I decided to go back and redo my corrections, so here is the final version (there may be some I overlooked, though): Media Bias and How it Affects Us (Final).

Final Exam

Okay, so I had a final exam in English today and the topic I chose was “Television”. I decided to not e-mail myself a copy, but instead just save it to my blog so I could post it later. I also saved another draft of something I started at random (I couldn’t use it for my final though because it wasn’t one of the topics). Without further ado, here it is:

Television

Since the invention of television, there have been many movies created, lives portrayed, and money made. The movie giants seem to be cashing in with almost every film coming out of Hollywood. The worst movies of the 1960’s are nothing compared to the movies labeled the “cleanest” of the current age. Are Americans enjoying the new movies littered with sex, drugs, violence, and secularism? Complaints to the FCC, which have exploded in recent years, seems to point to the answer being no. In addition, movies portraying more of these negative attributes have been proven to make the least amount of money at the box-office. Why, then, are movies still being written helping demoralize Americas families?

Few people seem to know that in the early days of movies, Hollywood had a code they followed. Either a movie passed this code, or the movie was not generally acceptable to the majority of people. This code limited what content a movie could include without having disapproval of the public. In the 1950’s, however, this code was abolished and a new set of standards, which is in use today, was formed.

This new set of standards Hollywood set to follow puts few limitations on what a movie can, or cannot have. The old system limited how much sex and violence a movie contained; the new system abolished this completely, allowing the movie producers to publish movies with any content they wished. Today’s movies can contain any form of “expression”: from a drug dealer made hero to an extramarital relationship between a man and woman. This new system is completely done by those in the movie industry, allowing these industries to give a movie any rating it so desires.

There have been an increasing number of boundaries within the industry being broken, forever being done away with. What once was a forbidden word on the public airwaves is now a common word. There once was a time when homosexuality was not even suggested of being portrayed on television. There are now few shows or movies which do not have at least one character who is homosexual. Slowly this form of entertainment has moved from free expression to near brainwash to those who watch it.

Children, whose families vividly express what is right and wrong, now have the choice of television. The media giants believe this generation is theirs, and in many cases, they have good reason to believe so. Parents are repeatedly allowing their children to watch anything on television, without any form of supervision. Children have little knowledge on what is right and wrong unless their parents guide them. With many parents using television as a way to stop their children from bothering them, Hollywood is allowed to slowly infuse generations with the garbage they wish children to have – much of which is directly against all the morals a family should be built upon.

Movies and Life

I went to see The Chronicles of Narnia with my two cousins, Brittany and Amber, tonight. Awesome movie. I honestly didn’t think I would like it (judging from the previews), but the story is told perfectly. The symbolism is what really drew me into the movie. I’m not the best movie reviewer, but this is one I’ll want to watch over and over again (largly because of the symbolism). We went to Wendy’s after the movie … I feel sick now.

Last night I went “shopping” (or something like that) with my aunt and my mom. We found a womans wallet in the road (the middle of the road). She’s going to try to get it back to the lady. It had everything of hers in it though, even her social security card. Scary stuff if it was stolen.

On other notes, the power went off tonight. This ended my servers 230 day uptime streak. Over a half a year uptime, no restart or anything. The UPS held up for about 30 minutes though, I was surprised. The UPS for my computer is supposed to be better and it was dying quickly (even on this low power LCD). It probably wouldn’t last 10 minutes. The other battery is replacable too, mine isn’t. Oh well. My computer doesn’t need to be one for 30 minutes, the server does. Since it went out I blew all the dust out of it with the air tank we have.

When I got home I got on the computer for a few minutes, and then went to turn up the heat because it was cold down here, it had dropped down to 64 (and the thermostat resets to 64), so I was a bit cold for a reason. I think I turned it up to like 69. I keep it between 68 and 69.

I guess I’m going to get me a big cup of cold milk and some nice cool chocolate and then hit the bed.

Sleepy

Well, I haven’t much to say tonight. I really just wanted to put something for today. I mean, I did live and stuff did happen, so I might as well. I took a math test, then I sat through a boring lecture. I was going to somewhat go shopping with my sister, but she didn’t want to go with me. To put a long story short, I got kind of ticked off and cursed (not at her, but about what was going on). I guess that’s a way to let people know I’m ticked off. I took my mom to Montgomery though, and then went to Starbucks, got me a coffee, and came home. I got a caramel macchiato.

I watched Without a Trace tonight. Good story line as always. Hmm … I listened to music tonight and played a new game.

Now it’s time to end this day so a new one may begin … sometime tomorrow.

Something’s Out There!

On Monday I got the reply back from my counsoler, she said that she strongly advised I not take the two history classes at the same time. I thought about just doing it anyway, as I must have four classes, but I decided to look at other classes. I decided to check to see if any English classes were avalible (something I had already done) and someone dropped one of the English classes. In the countless classes that were listed, other than the night classes, this particular class was the only one open. I quickly checked my days and all that, and it was the exact same class I had needed and requested the first time! Thank you God! When I registered the class should have went back to closed — as there were 19 people when I registered, I made 20 (which is the max).

I’ve finally got acustom to my new monitor, I really like it. It’s very sharp and crisp.

In my last blog post I forgot to mention something of importance … Sunday morning was like any other morning. I was awoken at 8:30am by my brother, and as always I layed there for a few minutes. Then I felt something crawling around my legs. Of course I don’t really think it’s anything, but I move the covers just to make sure, and low and behold … a spider. It wasn’t a small one either. I got up real quick and got my shoe and killed it. I just wonder how long I was sleeping with that under the covers. It must not have been the kind that bites (unless I made it happy by being warm, and so it didn’t want to bite me). Either way … I hope it never happens again.

I listened to something from my old church tonight. Everything that is said at church here seems to be echoed back to me when I listen to the ones from my old church. The pastor was talking about, for the most part, compromise. I started listening about mid way, though (it was over an hour long), it was very good. The end had questions from the audience, which was also very informative.

Christmas is less than 3 weeks away. Next week are finals (and a math final tomorrow). I guess it’s about that time to get some rest for that final …

Life Is Good

Last night I released the latest version of E-Blah. The release seems to have went flawlessly. There haven’t been many problems with upgrades or new installs. After I released that, I went to a movie with Brittany and I met Catherine and her friend, Kristen, there. We watched Yours Mine & Ours, which was very good. I actually wasn’t how I imagined it, it was much better. I noticed they were playing some awesome music in their movie too: Hawk Nelson. It’s awesome to see a movie website actually supporting (advertising) a Christian group.

I e-mailed my counsoler (because you have to if you change anything on your schedule) about taking two History classes, as that’s the only classes left that I can take. It being several days after, I hope those classes are still open. I have to take four classes to be concidered full time (therefore keeping me under my parents insurance). I wanted to take my next english class, but a class with a max of 20 students goes out quite quickly, and I waited too late to register. Learned my lesson I guess.

My computerI got my monitor on Friday at around 11:30am. It seems like double my other monitor, although my other was 17 inch. It doesn’t seem like two inches more would do so much. I’m also using a higher resolution, so that probably has an effect. I got on my laptop, and now everything on it looks huge, but there’s not much I can do with a 15 inch screen. It’s not too small, just diffrent now that I’ve started to grow on this one. The picture to the right is my “new” setup with my new monitor and everything.

I learned a little AJAX today for E-Blah. It’s not that difficult, so I might be trying to use it more often (but it definatly doesn’t need to be wore out). It’s interesting, to say the least.

My pastor and his wife from Saugahatchee came over today after church to pray over the family and all. I’m not going into any details other than that though, it was diffrent though … very diffrent.

In a very unfortunate event, one of the filiments blew in one of my cars break lights. I’ll see if Wal-Mart has one tomorrow when I get out of school.

I decided to go and stop reading Ezra again, so I went to Ester and read it. It’s always good to read that book; it always sends chills up my back when I read about the awesome power of our God and how he used Ester. As in every book, there were major key points. When the King couldn’t sleep, I found it great how God made that sleeplessness help save a man who would have otherwise been destoryed. I also found it even more interesting how the honors Haman had described was put to use on the most unlikely suspect — his enemy, Mordecai; and his murder plot was used against him when he was hanged from the very place he had planned for Mordecai to be hanged from. Of course if Hamon had read Solomons Proverbs he may have been able to avoid an early death.
